Club Foot Preventing relapse and recurrence in foot.

Clubfoot is the commonest congenital anomaly of the foot and ankle seen by an orthopaedic surgeon. It is a very difficult and perplexing problem for the orthopaedic surgeon to treat successfully. It is a challenge to the acumen and skill of the orthopaedic surgeon the world over.


Ponseti Technique


It is a full proof method for the treatment of congenital club foot deformity with casting and stitch less surgery. It requires 4-6 casting before the final stitch less surgery. Surgery requires the cutting of the tendoachilles. It gives near 100 percent result and your baby’s feet can become near normal to such an extent that no one can make out that it was once deformed.



Follow up:

It is very important part of the process and it involves bracing and regular follow up with me to prevent relapse and recurrence in foot. Brace should be applied immediately after the removal of last cast. For first three months brace should be worn for 23 hours and remaining one hour is used for cleaning, exercises.After three months the brace should be worn only at night for 12 hours only when the child is asleep. The provision is made to allow the toddler to walk during day hours. It should be continued for two to four year. No special shoe is required during the day time walking. First follow up visit at 15 days and then every month for six months or till age of 2 years. During this period child’s parents are counseled for continuous application of the brace as according to the protocol otherwise there will be recurrence.
